A Day in the Life of an ALT on the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme - TEFL Blog

Georgia Payne Destinations TEFL Information Alumni Experiences The unofficial motto of the JET Programme is 'every situation is different (ESID).' This is completely true, and every JET's day looks different depending on whether they work in a public or private school, whether they have co-JETs or are solo, their teaching partner's style, and the school's schedule. I teach in a private junior and senior high school in central Tokyo, where students are aged 12-18. The following is my own experience, but every ALT's (assistant language teacher) experience on the JET Programme is vastly different. Wake up, get ready for school and commute to school 6:30 - 7:50 Home room: 8:10 - 8:30 Periods 1-4 Lunch time 12:30 - 13:10 Periods 5-7 After school 16:00 - 16:30 Saturdays Are you ready to teach...  [Read more]

Is Tutoring Better Than Teaching a Group? - TEFL Blog

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences At its core, the same teaching principles and skills must be required and initiated for teaching one student or a group of 30 students. However, the key difference is time. An academic hour is 50 minutes, take 5 minutes to warm up and five minutes cool down, and this leaves 40 minutes for a class of 30 students. If one was to speak directly with every student, this equates to 1.33 minutes per student. Obviously, it would be pointless to do this, as not alone would each student get such little time as not to be of benefit. With one to the one, you get to spend the full 50 minutes with one student. Learning a language, be it a person's native language or a second language, it takes time and practice. Power of Attention Peer Learning Do you want to...  [Read more]

How to Control Yourself in Front of Students with Challenging Behavior - TEFL Blog

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Today I would like to summative the topic " How to control yourself in front of students with challenging behaviors?" I choose this topic because, in my opinion, this can be one of the most critical things which can happen in the classroom and the short- and long term damage can be irreparable and you can easily have lost the respect and joy of the students to participate in your class. It can also cause a career-damaging impact in your life and you may also lose the joy at teaching if you are not prepared for this situation. How Self-Analysis and Reflection Can Help a Teacher Improve - TEFL Blog

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas The CEO of a multi-million-dollar company I worked for once told me, "Change or change will change you." This motto has stuck with me since the day I heard him say it. It's part of the reason why I decided that I want to be a teacher. I know it's going to bring me out of my comfort zone and force me to do things that I otherwise would never do. A teacher can never stop learning; one has to constantly improve. Otherwise, what's the point? Some of the most important ways to ensure that one improves as a teacher are to self-analyze and reflect. It's fine to use these tactics at one's own pace and discretion, but they are of utmost importance. How do you motivate TEFL students? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TEFL FAQs

To motivate TEFL students, understanding their age group and unique challenges is crucial. Young learners often respond with enthusiasm to fun activities, while adults are typically self-motivated, attending classes with clear objectives. However, teenagers present a distinct challenge. Due to heightened self-awareness, they might hesitate to participate out of fear of mistakes or peer judgment. To enhance motivation in teens, implement strategies that boost their confidence, incorporate relatable content, and create a supportive classroom environment that encourages participation and reduces fear of errors. Use plenty of pop culture Use a little competition Play to their strengths Use pen pals to encourage writing skills Only use age appropriate reading material Use popular songs for...  [Read more]

How Might Language Teachers Productively Blur the Line Between Tasks, Games, and Testing? - TEFL Blog

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas In the following essay, I consider something like a continuum from task to the game to assessment, but only in the bookend learning moments of "input" and "output." I often think of learners in my classrooms as a gray box—not quite a "black box," the inner workings of which are completely mysterious, but a thing into which we only ever have uncertain, provisional insight. We can do all sorts of theorizing about language acquisition and psychometry but will never have anything as exact as a litmus test. However accurate my notion is, it motivates me to focus on things that are much more knowable and observable: the inputs and outputs of a learning situation.
