The Secrets of Learning Proper Grammar in an ESL Class - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Learning grammar is, suffice it to say, one of the most important points to focus on. Equally, for foreign students, they need to know not just about vocabulary but how and why vocabulary "hangs" in a certain way within a sentence. In my teaching experience, grammar has been difficult from the standpoint of getting the student to agree with the fact that it is important. I've found that many clients have been indoctrinated into believing that grammar is "hard", "boring" "dull" and worst of all, "unnecessary". This has been a challenge, to say the least. As a foreign language teacher, I've had to not mention grammar at all and introduce it as "how to use English correctly". This new perspective for a person who has experienced a bad time with English... [Read more]
Grammar Lessons: Does Teaching Standard Grammar Mean Delivering it Like a Native Speaker? - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Studying and learning standard English grammar is an experience that most native speakers must also do. Furthermore, even after learning grammar in an English education system, many native speakers still make grammatical errors in their everyday conversations, and especially so when writing formal documents.

Alumni Experiences
Grammar is an important aspect of a language where learners' and teachers' opinions vary. Some students love to find out or learn the proper usage of grammar while some wanted to do grammar exercises. While some love grammar, others hate it and think that it is the most boring part of learning a new language. Whatever your stand is, you cannot escape from learning grammar; it is vital in every sentence you read or write, speak or hear. Grammar is simply the word for the rules that people follow when they use a language. We need those rules in the same way as we need the rules in any game.

Some may conclude that the correct usage of English grammar only matters to teachers and have no real relevance in day to day life. We have to conclude that this is incorrect because grammar, disregarding the country or the language, is the infrastructure of communication. For instance, in the simplest of examples, when a message is delivered with the correct usage of grammar, it is much more understandable and precise to comprehend the intent and meaning of that message.

Learning English is the same as building a house and its grammar acts as a foundation and frame. Knowledge of English grammar helps us in the correction of mistakes and improvement of writing work. A person cannot learn a foreign language accurately only through a process of unconscious assimilation.

How Grammar Influences a Language Acquisition - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Teaching a language seems to have its roots precisely in teaching grammar: one of the first learning methodologies in history was grammar-translation. Used to translate Greek into Latin, it was inefficient for speech development, yet it remains one of the most popular teaching methods in education. Unfortunately, even from my own experience as a student, this is the preferred teaching method and it wasn't until recently that a more interactive way of learning was introduced in schools.

Songs as a Tool to Teach Grammar - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
To begin with, I have been teaching English for more than 30 years. I teach groups of students and individuals of different ages and abilities. That is why I have always had a problem how to raise my students' motivation, how to make my lessons interesting and exciting so that the bell at the end of the class would be for me, not for my students. I have always wanted them to be upset that the lesson is over. As a result of this research, I concluded that along with having different games, quizzes, puzzles, crosswords and project works, learning and singing songs is as challenging and helpful as doing grammar exercises. The results of learning English songs by heart is stunning. Do not think that I do this activity only for entertainment. It is a big... [Read more]
Why is Grammar Essential and How to Improve it Successfully? - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
Some people think that correct English grammar matters only to teachers and is of no real importance in daily life. This is certainly not true. Grammar, regardless of the country or the language, is the foundation for communication. When a message is relayed with the correct grammar, it is easier to understand the purpose and meaning of that message. To communicate, a learner should know the grammar of the language. It is important to be able to express yourself, but this should be done in a way that people find easy to understand.

Superlatives are the highest degree of comparison. This means, superlatives are used when we talk about something that is at the top level or the bottom level of a quality. Let's take a look at how the superlative works in the English language.
For one-syllable adjectives, we simply add -est at the end of the word to indicate the superlative. For example:
For two-syllable adjectives that end in "y", we change the "y" to "i" and add "est" to indicate the superlative. For example:
For two-syllable adjectives that don't end in "y" and adjectives with three or more syllables, we add "the most" or "the least" to indicate the superlative. For example:

Entertaining Approach to Teaching Grammar - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
Grammatical structures are the essential building blocks to any language, English is no exception. Without a frame, a painting will fall off the wall or lose its form. The meaning behind the words is very much the same as a painting in a frame. The ideas which are meant to be conveyed are like the characters of a painting, the grammatical tools are like the colors, the structure and order of the words are like the brushstrokes which add depth and tone to a work of art. English is art. Subjects, objects, and verbs are the colors, shapes, and tones of basic English.

5 Simple Ideas on Teaching Grammar - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
I think of myself as having been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to learn other languages at a young age. I was taught French in primary school and at home, I learned or acquired Spanish. At school, I remember my language teacher being very textbook-oriented and she focused and followed the book to the "T". I picked up easily on the grammar because I had already learned Spanish at home and I was also very keen to learn foreign languages, especially French. The grammar didn't seem difficult or boring to me at all because I had already been exposed to the language at a very early age. However, many students didn't feel the same way I did and had difficulty with the subject and therefore, developed a disinterest in learning another language.... [Read more]
