Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching.
The phonemic alphabet and how best to instruct it form the bulk of this unit. It almost seems counter intuitive to teach a meta-alphabet for a language but with a language as complex as English I can see the value of breaking the learning down into how to write it and how to say it. Learning a secondary alphabet is far simpler than learning all the exceptions and special cases that words in English have. This was a really interesting introduction to basic English linguistics and how to teach pronunciation to foreign learners. The attention to how vocal chords work and where in the mouth and throat the sound is coming from is an important yet often understudied component of foreign language instruction. The use of a universal phonetic alphabet is important for helping students learn correct pronunciation.
