Come experience Amazing Peru! Extreme Learning Centers (ELC) is hiring native English speaking TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certified instructors for teaching positions starting on April 1st and May 1st, 2020. Our institute has two locations in Arequipa, with 27 total classrooms and a daily average of approximately 900 students of English as a Foreign Language. Most teachers are assigned three adult groups per monthly cycle, with an average class size of 10 students. We teach all levels; from basic to advanced. Adult groups meet 2 hours per day, Monday – Friday, 18 days/36 hours per month. We also have children groups which meet on Saturdays for 2.5 hours. Please note that we are not looking for “lecturers” but rather, we are looking for individuals who will use our materials to focus on high student production of language (speaking and writing in meaningful ways).
We focus on supporting our teachers by provide you with training, exams, DVDs, audio CDs, teacher books, and ELC guides/lesson plans which show you which units to cover and how to teach those units. This is a big plus, as it makes planning time minimal.
We are located in the beautiful city of Arequipa, which is set in a picturesque valley, surrounded by 19,000+ foot (6000 meter) tall mountains and El Misti Volcano. The weather is fantastic, with 300 sunny days per year and temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. The valley is fed by three rivers; thus it has many parks and green areas. We are also located 80 miles from beaches on the Pacific coast and only a one-hour flight to Lima or Cusco.
Peru is a developing country, so our students can’t afford to pay a lot for their courses. Therefore, we can’t provide airfare or housing. However, it is important to understand pay and the cost of living in Arequipa. Our teachers earn, on average, about $5 USD per hour. This may not seem like much, but minimum wage in Peru is about $1.40 per hour. So, our teachers earn much more than local workers and can live comfortably on their pay. Most teachers live in “casonas” which are 200+ year old stone haciendas/houses with inner courtyards surrounded by private rooms and private bathrooms which face the inner courtyards. Others rent private rooms or mini apartments in homes of local families. Rent usually runs between S/500 and S/700 per month ($150 to $205), including utilities.
Our teachers usually earn between S/1500 to S/2000 per month (Peruvian Nuevo Soles) which is about $460 to $600 USD. For those who want to earn more money, we usually have private tutoring and extra groups available. The majority of teachers teach 120 hours per month. Our teachers don't get financially wealthy, but the experience of living and teaching in Peru is priceless! It should be noted that all instructors teach on a split schedule, as Peruvians want to study before going to work/school in the mornings or after work/school in the late afternoons/evenings. That said, most live within a 15-minute walk to our two locations, so there are no long commutes, such as is found in big cities.
If you are the type of person who is flexible, enjoys helping others learn and enjoys discovering new cultures, ELC is the place for you!
