Would you like to gain experience as an English teacher while helping newcomers in the Netherlands? EAN is inviting (future) teachers for a volunteer position!
As a volunteer English language teacher at English Academy for Newcomers, you will support highly-educated newcomers in the Netherlands who have faced disruptions in their education and careers due to fleeing their homes. You'll help them rebuild their lives by assisting them in achieving a strong command of English, which is essential for pursuing higher education programmes.
Responsibilities
You will be working together with other volunteers from a diverse context to teach B1, B2 and/or C1 (IELTS oriented) English to refugee students. We will provide you with teaching materials and workshops to help set learning goals and utilise our custom curriculum. Your responsibilities will include:
teaching English;
providing personalised feedback;
conducting exams;
grading;
sharing knowledge with fellow volunteers.
The assignment requires a commitment of at least three months (i.e., one teaching block), starting from 16 April. Ideally, you are also available in the next academic year. Teaching time slots are limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays between 18:00 and 20:00, but you can also teach on one of those days. When applying, please indicate your availability.
Requirements
Applicants may come from all kinds of backgrounds, such as being a student, university teacher, professor, and/or a newcomer themselves. We work in a diverse team and welcome all identities, perspectives and backgrounds. However, applicants must meet all the general requirements:
excellent command (minimum C1 level) of English;
availability to facilitate one weekly class on location during our teaching times (Tuesdays and Thursdays 18:00-20:00);
keen interest in language teaching, in particular, teaching newcomers;
be at least a 3rd year Bachelor's student (or where justified professional training of a similar level).
Preferably, Applicants Meet The Specific Requirements
A BA/MA/PhD in (English) Language Teaching (ELT), Applied Linguistics, English/American Language and Culture/Literature, and/or a CELTA/DELTA/TESOL/TEFL certificate (current students of the aforementioned degrees are also welcome to apply for a teaching internship);
experience with Academic English and internationally recognised tests such as IELTS;
excellent intercultural communication skills.
We Offer
a volunteer position of at least 2 hours per week, but you might contribute for more hours if you want that;
a fun volunteer organisation where you can gain experience as an English teacher while helping newcomers within a diverse context.
About Us
English Academy for Newcomers (locations Utrecht and Groningen) teaches English (levels B1, B2 and C1 IELTS oriented) to academically trained refugees, asylum seekers and other newcomers (18+) in the North and mid-Netherlands. We do this to help them get back to their (academic) life as soon as possible in the Netherlands. The classes are organised at Utrecht University and at the University of Groningen and are given by volunteers as a means to make the costs as low as possible for the target group. We work with a diverse, professional, motivated and positive volunteering team. One of the co-founders of EAN, Kinan Alajak, was nominated for the UU Diversity & Inclusion award in 2022. This year, EAN received a subsidy of UU’s RechtOpLeren Fonds. Last year, EAN won the Impact Award at the Faculty of Arts of RUG.
