While it is not exactly a tourist hotspot, it has a pleasant city centre and the pace of life is very relaxed. It is close to some beautiful, hilly vineyard-filled countryside, and within striking distance of the mountains (there are organised trips to go skiing available in town) and the lovely Ligurian seaside. The nearby big cities of Milan, Turin and Genoa are easily reached and boast excellent shops, historical centres, galleries and museums. Other nearby towns worth visiting include Pavia with its charterhouse and Acqui Terme with its spas. Some of the best Italian food and, especially, wine and chocolate come from this region. There is also a romantically underachieving third division football team to go and see!
