Role Statement:The Secondary EAL Specialist Teacher (7-12) reports to the Head of Learning Support and Head of Secondary and works closely with the Head of English and other personnel to ensure optimum student learning. He/she is responsible for developing and conducting learning programs for secondary students with EAL needs.
The EAL teacher will:• possess a sound knowledge of a broad range of learning needs to promote students’ social, emotional, intellectual and physical development;• have experience in catering effectively for the range of student abilities;• have classroom teaching and co-teaching experience (ability to teach or support subject English and/or the NSW Higher School Certificate EAL/D course is desirable);• work collaboratively in classrooms, in a full-time capacity, to support and teach students with EAL needs;• work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;• demonstrate a commitment to consistent professional development;• deliver an EAL in an EAP (English for Academic Purposes) learning environment;• carry out data-based tracking of students to ensure maximised learning opportunities.
Essential Criteria:• Qualified practising teacher with high level qualifications in EAL teaching.• Successful teacher of students from diverse backgrounds and experience.• Knowledge of inclusive instructional practices and differentiation.• Demonstrate skills in planning and delivering programs which are inclusive of additional language learners.• Highly developed ICT skills and an ability to use technology as an integral part of teaching and learning.• Knowledge and ability to administer a variety of EAL assessments.• Effective communication skills with a wide range of groups and individuals – including colleagues, parents, students and members of the wider community.• Ability to work effectively as a member of small and large teams.• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.• A passionate, knowledgeable and proactive teacher with a commitment to wellbeing practices and positive psychology in education (i.e., PROSPER).• Behaves ethically, reflects positivity, demonstrates a growth mindset, commitment to continuous professional development and contributes to the school’s ethos and community life.
Responsibilities:The EAL Teacher will be responsible for, but not limited to, a range of the following activities:• Demonstrating commitment to student wellbeing.• Developing and documenting effective teaching and learning programs for students with EAL needs so that structures, programs and support are in place to ensure inclusion, transition and success throughout their schooling.• Maintaining complete and accurate records, evaluations and assessment procedures.• Modifying and adapting programs in the light of evaluation and feedback.• Working within a multi-disciplinary team and liaising with staff and parents regarding student progress.• Preparing and managing resources as required.• Supporting students to access the curriculum within the classroom.• Supporting teachers to differentiate according to the needs of students.• Providing professional development opportunities to staff.• Participating in the co-curricular life of the school, and other duties, as required by the Head, which includes: extra-curricular/after-school activities/sport, school camps, performance events/public events, outreach/community programs, scheduled duties and timetabled responsibilities and parent functions.• Any other duties as may be required by the Head of School.
