Xiaoshan (pop. 1.2 million) is a district of the city of Hangzhou. It is a very affluent city, and is clean and modern in the centre, with a large number of shops and privately owned businesses. Despite this it has, as yet, remained relatively traditional and has managed to retain much of it?s character. There are many parks, rivers and canals and it is definitely unpolluted by Chinese standards. Xiaoshan itself is quite small, although it does have a number of bars and restaurants, including a few 'Western-style' ones, and Hangzhou (pop. 6 million), with it's university population, is a simple 30 minute bus ride away if you are looking for brighter lights. Xiaoshan isn't what you might call 'cosmopolitan', but if you are looking for other western faces you will certainly find them in Hangzhou, as well as other Western comforts such as the huge Carrefours department store, which stocks pretty much everything that you might need. If it is nature and culture that are looking for then Hangzhou has the famous West Lake and a beautiful Buddhist temple, as well as a fantastic silk market where you can buy silk at rock bottom prices and have it made up by one of the many tailors in the area. Shanghai is an easy 2 hour train ride away if you fancy a short trip on your days off, and Xiaoshan has its own airport for easy domestic flights to other cities in China. Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching.

This was an interesting unit as it provided a lot of examples and material samples , it also explained how to use them , giving many useful tips about textbooks and materials. I have used all the techniques described and explained in the unit during my years of teaching, but reading about them helped me doing some critical thinking about my own teaching methods and habits. The unit was useful and interesting overall. This unit covered the past tense. I was a bit confused myself because I never learned the usage of some of these past tenses, they just came naturally to me. I can see why students would have difficulty in knowing exactly when to use the proper past tense form. Once again, something I enjoyed reading was about different activities to try o use in class in order for the students to differentiate between the past tenses.
