JOB GOAL / PURPOSE
Elementary School (ES) Dean of Students assists ES Administration in the daily operations of the school related to students. The ES Dean of Students is responsible for all student discipline and coordination of ES student life. International School of Beijing seeks a dynamic leader who is passionate about the ES age group to serve as Dean of Students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Student Behavior Management and Discipline
• Proactively share school rules, policies, and behaviour management systems with students, families, and teachers
• Respond to behaviour and disciplinary incidents, utilising restorative practices
o Lead peer mediation sessions to prevent fights from escalating
o Track student absences and tardiness to provide intervention
o Provide restorative reflection conversations and written reflections
o Ensure power school log entry documentation
o Ensure parents, teachers and counsellors have appropriate information regarding the incident
o Coordinate proactive behaviour plans for students with high behaviour needs, using applied behaviour analysis data
o Keep meticulous records and follow through with appropriate, scaled consequences such as detentions, suspensions, expulsions as per school policy.
• Support individual and school-wide protection of children in accordance with ISB’s child safeguarding policies; participate on the Child Protection Team
• Work closely with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with school policies in managing classroom behavioural issues.
• Support grade level teams and respond appropriately to student issues.
• Communicate both verbally and in writing, with students, parents and appropriate school staff about any disciplinary event or consequence in a clear and timely manner.
• Oversee in-school suspensions
• Supervise teacher duties to ensure a shared responsibility in managing student behaviour during breaks and transitions.
• Keep accurate records regarding disciplinary infractions and consequences.
• Review the student discipline policy annually to ensure accurate documentation and explanation of current school policies and practices relating to discipline
• Prepare and present annual statistical reports on student behaviour and attendance
2. Student Life Coordination
• Lead Student Council and ensure student voice in decisions and policies
• Act as the point person for students on a leave or with restricted attendance (i.e. partial days due to medical issues).
• Schedule, coordinate, and oversee the quality and purpose of LES and UES Assemblies in collaboration with the ES Principal team.
• Communicate effectively and proactively with parents regarding upcoming student events. Utilise the Communications Office and ISB Weekly to share information and promote Elementary School activities.
• Oversee Student Council, scheduling and facilitating meetings, planning initiatives in line with the ISB mission, and coordinating events.
• Help plan, schedule, attend, and schedule chaperones for Elementary School student events
• Work collaboratively with school counsellors and school psychologist to support student needs
3. Perform any other duties as assigned by the ES Assistant Principals, ES Principal or the Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCES REQUIRED:
• Prior experience as an elementary school teacher-leader or administrator required
• School administration and/or leadership certification or degree (current or in progress) preferred
• An aptitude for building and maintaining positive relationships with students, educators, and parents
• An ability to work with others and build consensus to support the ISB mission and core values
• Superior organisational strategies and incident documentation skills
• Resilience in solving problems
• Experience managing and preventing discipline issues through peer mediation, restorative practices, and progressive discipline
