EAL Homeroom Teacher

The Protected Class Homeroom Teacher will play a key role in supporting the language development of students for whom English is not the first language. In this role, the teacher is expected to support learners in the classroom and in pull-out sessions. The successful candidate will be able to differentiate instruction and enable all English language learners (ELLs) to reach benchmarks, using the latest English as an additional language (EAL) research and teaching strategies for new-to-English learners. The Protected Class Teacher will implement effective teaching strategies to enhance English language proficiency, facilitate academic success, and promote cultural awareness among students.

Key Responsibilities:-Plan and deliver instruction to EAL students in accordance with the Alberta Program of Studies, ensuring a positive and inclusive learning environment.-Foster a culturally responsive classroom environment that celebrates diversity and promotes cross-cultural understanding.-Use English as the exclusive language of instruction and implement differentiated teaching strategies to accommodate diverse needs of students with varying English language proficiency levels.-Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and provide timely feedback to students and parents.-Maintain regular and effective communication with parents regarding student progress, activities, and school events. Foster strong partnerships with parents to support the holistic development of students.-Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behaviour.-Integrate technology to enhance instructional delivery and learning experiences.-Order supplies and assess maintenance needs.-Collaborate with other teachers to ensure a cohesive and integrated curriculum.-Actively participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay current with best practices.-Attend staff meetings as required.-Contribute to the organization and participation in school events, field trips, and other related activities.-Contribute expertise and passion to After School Activities (ASAs), actively participating in planning and facilitating engaging extra-curricular programs for student enrichment and holistic development.

Skills and Qualifications:-Bachelor's degree or above in Education, English, TESOL, or a related field.-Valid certification in teaching English as a second language (TESL) or a similar certification.-At least 2 years of experience teaching EAL learners.-Experienced with the Alberta curriculum (preferred).-Understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by English language learners.-Patience and adaptability to work with students who are at different language proficiency levels.-Able to highly differentiate instruction to enable all EAL learners to reach benchmarks, using the latest EAL research and teaching strategies for new-to-English learners.-Strong understanding of student development, educational psychology, and effective teaching methodologies.-Ability to maintain a positive and well-managed classroom environment.-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.-Demonstrated passion for fostering a love of learning in students.-Adaptable, innovative, and committed to continuous improvement and student success.
