Writer: Lorosa'e English Language Institute (LELI) | Email: [email protected]
d at our training centre, but some classes take place offsite. Dili is a small city, so all off-site classes are within a 10-minute motorbike/scooter ride.
The majority of our students are adults and have quite a low level of English (CEF A1 - A2) so a lot of the teaching involves General English, although successful candidates will be expected to adapt their courses to suit specific client needs and/or be capable of teaching across a range of courses including English for the Workplace, IELTS Exam Preparation, ESP and on occasion provide one-to-one tuition.
Our clients include government ministries and national institutions, international and local humanitarian and development organisations, and foreign diplomatic missions including the Australian, New Zealand and American Embassies. In addition to the specific organisations we provide training for, we also teach approximately 500 students per term on our afternoon and evening public courses, of which a growing number (approximately 30%) of students are teenagers.
The standard of education in Timor is generally poor, and a significant number of our students have had their education disrupted due to Timor-Leste's years of struggling for independence. Additionally, and while our students come from a variety of backgrounds, there is a low level of IT literacy and the pedagogical approach most are familiar with means that the majority of our students have difficulty with abstract thinking and/or autonomous learning. Therefore, in conjunction with building students English language proficiency, teachers at LELI are expected to help develop students analytical and critical thinking skills through a range of different teaching strategies.
It's also important to note that daily life in Timor-Leste can be quite demanding and is filled with challenges associated with a post-conflict, developing country. Dili is a small, quiet, unpretentious city and is a very different environment to most South-East Asian cities. The heat and humidity is not to be underestimated, nor is its remote and isolated location, so it's certainly not a place that suits everyone.
However, for those with a sense of adventure willing to invest their time and energy, not only is it a beautiful island with stunning landscapes, but it's undoubtedly a land of opportunity and reward, and successful candidates would be helping to make a genuine difference in the development of a nation that is rich in culture and history.
Qualifications
All Applicants MUST have a Bachelors Degree.
All Applicants MUST be native-level English speakers.
Experience living and/or working in a developing country is desirable.
Experience of riding a motorbike/scooter is desirable.
TEFL/TESOL preferred.
Salary and Benefits
12-month Contract with opportunity for one-year to two-year extension.
$30 USD (net) per contact teaching hour. (Approx. $2,750 pcm).
$500 contribution towards health insurance.
Contribution towards outbound flight.
End of Contract completion bonus.
First 7 nights accommodation paid for.
Working permit and visa costs paid for.
20 days paid leave.

am for the entire school year.
ACTIVE ENGLISH WEEKS teachers: teaching at various partner institutions throughout the Czech and Slovak Republics. Each successful candidate would travel almost every weekend to a different town and meet a different group of students, from young children through to young adults. These positions are available for two month to one school year agreements, and candidates must be willing and able to deal with travelling from town to town and the variation of students.
Qualifications
In an ideal world every applicant would have amazing qualifications and perfect blemish free CVs, but we all know the world is far from ideal. We put a high value on honesty, the ability to work both as part of a team but also as an individual, people who are willing to learn and develop. We also need people who like to have fun personally and professionally, teaching should be fun, something to enjoy while you do it, not a chore and not a last choice in life. TEFL/TESOL preferred.
Salary and Benefits
The remuneration on offer is very good when compared to most positions in Slovakia, not just in the teaching world but in general. SIDAS LANGUAGE SCHOOL only directly discusses the remuneration on offer during face to face interviews with potential candidates. The hours are comfortable, the stress is limited and the opportunity to grow as a teacher and experience a beautiful part of the world is there too.
While our package will provide a very comfortable existence if you are looking to earn an early retirement through teaching TEFL then the Czech and Slovak Republics are probably the wrong place to look.
To apply, please contact the email address given in the job heading. Please state, when applying, which position you are interested in, or both, if you are interested in.
Due to the volume of applications SIDAS LANGUAGE SCHOOL can only reply to those who we feel have the potential to work with us, we do however, wish every applicant all the best for their personal and professional futures. Read more
