The Master of Arts in Education is an additional high-level certification that is aimed at experienced, practicing teachers who are looking to further increase their qualifications and teaching knowledge to benefit their career prospects and the quality of their student’s education.
The course can be completed entirely online from any location in the world, providing a considerable amount of flexibility when it comes to how and when you choose to study. In addition, you are also welcome to attend module discussion sessions that are held on two pre-scheduled Saturdays for each module of the course at the Bangkok School of Management. Logistically, this option is only available to those living and working in the region, but it is a highly recommended feature for those who are able to attend.
Course Content
The full course program consists of 8 modules delivered over a 12 month period; however, candidates who already hold a TEFL/TESOL qualification are able to receive credit that allows two modules to be waived. For all TEFL/TESOL graduates the course is therefore divided into 6 separate modules as outlined below:
- Module 1: Curriculum & Instruction: Planning & Development
- Module 2: Dimensions of Learning: Application in Classroom
- Module 3: Assessment in Education: Measurement & Evaluation
- Module 4: Educational Technology: The 21st Century Classroom
- Module 5: Classroom Dynamics and Behavior Management
- Module 6: Educational Research: Designs and Procedures
Each module will require somewhere in the region of 48 hours of study, including a 3,500 to 4,000 word assignment. On completion of the six modules and their written assignments, you will then need to submit an action research paper of around 5,000 words to complete the course. The whole of the course content is delivered over a period of eight months.
For candidates who have completed a BA in TESOL, a further two modules will be waived. Therefore you will need to complete the following four modules to earn the MA in Education:
- Module 1: Dimensions of Learning: Application in Classroom
- Module 2: Assessment in Education: Measurement & Evaluation
- Module 3: Psychology of Learning: Lessons from Cognitive Psychology
- Module 6: Educational Research: Designs and Procedures
Each module is accompanied by a 3,500 to 4,000 word assignment and a 5,000 word action research paper is also required. By following this route the course has a reduced duration of six months.
Course Aims
The general aim of the Master of Arts in Education is to prepare a highly skilled, internationally orientated workforce of teachers who have an increased level of knowledge, skills and efficiency. By successfully completing the course you will develop the following range of transferable skills:
- A comprehensive understanding of educational and psychological theories, principles and concepts that directly or indirectly affect teaching and learning.
- The ability to critically analyze and verify the application of these theories, principles and concepts in your own day-to-day teaching practices.
- The ability to construct models and plan strategies aimed at improving curriculum delivery.
- The ability to employ assessment techniques that are in alignment with modern teaching practice.
- The development of a sound educational philosophy that is reflected throughout the planning and delivery of your lessons.
- The ability to evaluate contemporary educational ideas and practices and critically examine their relevance, appropriateness, and benefit in relation to your own students’ learning and achievement.
- The resolve to embrace, practice and advocate for educational best practices that maximize teacher satisfaction and students’ success in learning.
Course Assessment
Throughout the course your understanding and progress will be assessed by the completion of a written assignment that accompanies each module. The six module assignments are based on putting the theory you have learned from the module’s materials into practice in the classroom. Each assignment’s requirements will vary depending on the contents of each module, but they will generally be between 3,500 and 4,000 words in length. In addition to the six module assignments, you will need to complete an action research paper of 5,000 words to round off your studies.
As the course is designed to provide a practical based learning experience, the course assignments are used to assess an individual’s understanding by how effectively they have applied each module’s content in real life situations. At no time will you be required to undertake any formal exams. Instead, the course’s ongoing assessment strategy is designed to gauge each student's ability to apply, analyze, synthesize, evaluate and create, rather than the ability to regurgitate facts.
